    (2022-03-04) Munasinghe, B.S.L; Abeysekara, W.A.T; Abeyratne, Fredrick
Rice being the major starchy staple food consumed by the people of Sri Lanka the present paper attempts mainly to discuss food security and related policy issues as applicable to rice. A part from contributing to about 40% of the daily calorie requirements of lower income groups rice also accounts for about 20 % of the per capita expenditure on food items.Rice farming is the main occupation of the rural population who comprise nearly 80% of the 16 million population of Sri Lanka. Therefore it is not surprising to find that successive governments of Sri Lanka have devoted large amounts of resources to enable the people of this country to be self sufficient in rice thus assuring food security
