The results support the pricing to market hypothesis that exporters adjust their profit margins in response to exchange rate changes to remain competitive in the world market. Thus, the main conclusion of this study is that no matter how small a country is in terms of its market share. It specialised in a range of products, there is no presumption that it is a price-taker in the world market.Item Export growth and the terms of trade: the case of the curious elasticities(1993-07) Riedel, James; Athukorala, PremachandraItem Growth of manufactured exports from Sri Lanka : the appearance and the reality(1987-01) Athukorala, Premachandra; Bandara, JayatillekeItem Growth of manufactured exports primary commodity dependence and net export earnings: Sri Lanka(Latrobe University, 1987-06) Athukorala, Premachandra; Bandara, Jayatilleke S.Item Market-oriented policy reforms and export-led industrialization(2007) Athukorala, PremachandraItem Sri Lanka : part III(1991) Cuthberston, Andrew G.; Athukorala, PremachandraItem Terms of trade and manufactured exports from developing countries(Latrobe University, 1992-05) Athukorala, PremachandraThis paper examines the empirical validity of the singer hypothesis that, owing to certain country specific disadvantages, the net barier terms of trade (NBTT) for exports of manufactures from developing countries (ICs) tend to experience secular deterioration favouring the importing industrialised countries.(ICs). We estimate Irend rates of NBTT for manufactured exports from all DCs as well as from India, Korea and Taiwan, by applying an econometric procedure designed to avoid the problem of spurious trend estimation to a carefully assembled data set which avoids many pitfalls in the data used in previous studies. The results overwhelmingly reject the hypothesis and suggest that the shift away from primary commodities and towards manufactured goods in their export composition has allowed DCs to escape unequal exchange relations in their trade with ICs.
