J.The paper is based on a case study of the land settlement programme in Sri Lanka with the focus on the Mahaweli areas. The study was conducted particularly with a view to isolating the special characteristics that distinguish state-sponsored settlement areas from other rural contexts, and to understanding how such characteristics relate to non-farm employment.
