Abstract:
The paper highlights the problems encountered by children of migrant mothers, through a study carried out in three administrative districts. Discussions with teachers, care givers, migrants’ children and religious leaders provided the necessary data. It was revealed that many of them undergo abuse, both physical and sexual, and have difficulties in performing well in school. Emotional and behavioural problems are common and many of them find it difficult to establish or maintain relationships with family or friends, and even communicate with them. A lesser number of children had the strength to cope with the stresses resulting from the absence of the mother, and were able to survive with some normalcy.
