dc.description.abstract |
Maldives, having a total population of approximately three hundred and thirty thousand, acts as a hosting country for over hundred thousand migrant workers, with over fourteen thousand of them being from Sri Lanka. This influx of labour is mainly due to the tourist boom in the country which consists of over 200 inhabited islands. However, Maldives is now facing several problems of human trafficking, involving illegal recruitments and forced labour practices in the country. Labour migration has a national impact on the national economy of both Sri Lanka and the Maldives, and the research is centred on the multitude of issues relating to such migration, with a view to providing recommendations to all stakeholders in both countries to regulate and improve the conditions of migrant workers in the Maldives. |
