The purpose of this booklet is to highlight in a succint manner the main concerns and issues facing the Sri Lankan Girl Child. 1990 has been designated the year of the Girl Child by SAARC countries. Within the context of Sri Lanka, there is no apparent gender bias. There is equal access to education and health service. Indicators such as infant mortality reveal that girls fare better than boys. However, son preferences do exist.Adolescent girls face the problems of early marriage, and a deteriorating nutritional status as they move towards marriage and motherhood.en_US
