Abstract:
The Migration Profile of Sri Lanka gives a comprehensive overview of the migration situation in the country. It traces the history and initial causes leading to migration, different types of migrants, contribution to the development of the country and also outlines the challenges to international migration. While focusing mainly on external labour migration, the publication also covers the Sri Lanka diaspora spread around the world, with special mention of the Tamil migrants to countries such as Australia and Canada. The demand for skilled labour internationally and Sri Lanka’s inability to meet this demand is also touched upon while high skilled labour specially in the health sector and its negative impacts are also mentioned. Governance and procedures relating to migrations, recruitment, social welfare schemes including finances are given its due place, and the publication finally provides recommendation for maximizing the benefits of migration. The entire publication is replete with statistics, charts and figures and is a useful tool for policy makers and regulatory bodies in the country.
