In earlier papers, the economies of patent have been examined and the arguments made that world welfare is likely to fall if patent rights are extended to the entire world. This argument it recapitulated here with special attention to the assumptions that are needed for its validity. These assumptions are then reexamined in the context of markets for art to see whether the argument carries over. The region encompasses both very large and technologically highly sophisticated nations such as the United States and Japan as well as less wealthy nations like the Philippines. The ''four tigers'', with their emerging dominance in proven technologies, have further necessitated Australia to forge ahead in technological advancement and not to compete with the developing nations where factor costs are hard to match.
